8th Grade Black Rocket Project

Posted Date: 05/19/26 (10:02 AM)

The students on 8th Grade Black have been working on building rockets using two-liter bottles. Throughout this interdisciplinary project, students created scale drawings, designed their rockets, and calculated the volume and surface area of their models.
We incorporated all four core subjects into the project:
  • In ELA, students focused on research and informational writing.
  • In Math, students worked with scale factor, volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres, constructing and interpreting functions, and square and cube roots.
  • In Science, students applied Newton’s Laws to explain motion and explored the engineering design process.
  • In Social Studies, students studied the history of space exploration.
On Monday, students had the opportunity to launch their rockets, experiment with stomp rockets, and test how far paper airplanes could fly. The project gave students a hands-on learning experience that connected classroom concepts to real-world applications while encouraging creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
